Appaloosa Mare:

Ok, remember this model I was in the process of painting? 

Well, it was supposed to be from this photo.

Well, it didn't turn out.  I did her in pastels so when you use pastels you go from light to dark. It's the layering process. Well, I went too dark to begin with and I just couldn't balance out the colors to fit.  I wanted the lighter chestnut horse with the snowflake spots that blended in and didn't stand out so stark white in contrast to the body color. What I had just wasn't going to be this horse, and I tried to get it lighter with washes and it was just not working. So I just accepted that it was going to be a darker version of this and worked on focusing my attention to the blacket pattern.  The paint wasn't cooperating, I had thick areas of paint and I just was getting more and more frustrated with this model.  Until I just got to a point I couldn't stand it anymore. So, I know it may be disappointing to my blogger followers, but I ........buffed the paint off as best I could , smoothed the surface, and reprimed her in white again.  I know I know....  But I just had to.  It's my OCD kicking in I think.  I just would rather start over on another model and try again with this reference photo.  I think maybe a standing model.  A Lady Phase or a Stud Spider maybe. 

So you may be wondering what did I do instead with this model then?  Well, I found two new reference pictures and went absolutely nuts.  I LOVE this horse now. I didn't take progress photos this time because I wasn't as sure of what I was going to wind up keeping so I didn't want people to watch and like the new model only to scrap it again like I did the other paintjob.  But here are the two photos I went by this time.

And here is the progress of the model now.  I'm close to completing her. 

I don't know about everyone else, but I think it's an improvement.

Second Update For Today:

Moving along with the painting.  Here I've added the roaning to the neck and will start lifting it in spots.

This is after some lifting and more layers.

Here I've pinked out the muzzle and areas of the face.

Now I've gone back and covered most of the flesh in black with small spots showing through. I'm also adding more layers to the white appy spots on the neck, upper body and face.

Still more layers. She's got a ways to go yet. But she's getting better each time I work on her. (I think)

Painting Underway:

I've started on the Babyflo's paintjob.

First I've started pastels. She's here a light golden orangy chestnut. 

More layers. Slowly getting darker.

Now  I've detailed the musculature and taken her even darker.

Now I've finished so far with the pastels and now what I've done is put a dark brown wash over her in acrylics, and blackened the eyes. 

I guess I jumped ahead a bit but it didn't seem so.  What I did here is I've gone back and taken black and dark brown pastels and darkened her head a little more. I did another wash, then I have taken thinned down white and started roaning out the areas where her appy markings are going.  She's roaned out a lot, so it's looking really sloppy and messy at this point.  It'll change though. What technique I'm using right now is the wet lift method. I take the white and paint the area and while the paint is dry but yet still soft, I take wet brushes and wet q-tips and roll over the white to dilute it on the horse and lift it off in certain areas. Then go back and repaint hairing and more opaque spots with more white paint. 

This last picture below is a bit blurry, (sorry) but I'll add more today. This is after I've lifted much of the white away to clean up the pattern and define the darker sections. I think it's easier to understand what I'm doing by looking at the changes in the progress pictures more than my typing it out. Also.  Let me put up a reference picture of the actual horse I'm basing this model loosely on.  That may help to see what inspires this model.

Primed and Ready For Paint:

I've got the Andy stallion primed and ready for paint.

The BabyFlo is also primed and ready for paint. 

And this is a stablemate warmblood resculpt into a full passing dressage horse.  You may remember it as a chestnut before.  I've reprimed and am repainting it to be a dappled grey this time. 

Started on the Horses Again:

I have a BabyFlo CM I'm doing into a really pissed off Appaloosa mare that's lunging while tossing her head around widly.  She's got her lip curled up and teeth barred also. Not finished with her yet. I don't know if I wanna give her face some shaggy hair or leave it. 

And I have a Salinero Andalusian stallion I'm completing but he's spoken for already I think.

He's going to be a dapple grey I'm thinking. 

"Jack Of Spades" 1/6 Scale Foal Complete And Arabian Progress:

He's done!  His name is "Jack Of Spades".  He'll be in MH$P very soon. 

 

And here is "Aladdin Sane" so far.  The fleabitten Arabian I was working on.  I finally started his paintjob. He's gonna be nice.  He's a Peter Stone Arabian body with a resin Arabian head used.  I don't remember who sculpted those arabian heads but I bought several of them back years ago when they were listed in MH$Ps.  I wish I knew who sculpted them. They used to sell I think Friesian heads or Andalusian heads and Arabians.  Just the heads.  No bodies.  I wish they sold those again.  I've been sitting on my stash like a crazy hoarder. lol
